Caring for Your Dentures: A Complete Guide

Proper denture care is essential for maintaining both the appearance and longevity of your dentures. With the right routine, your dentures can remain comfortable and functional for many years. Here is our comprehensive guide to keeping them in top condition.

Daily Cleaning Routine

Just like natural teeth, dentures need to be cleaned daily to remove food particles, plaque, and stains. Use a soft-bristled denture brush with a non-abrasive denture cleaner. Avoid regular toothpaste, as it can be too abrasive and cause microscopic scratches that harbour bacteria.

Morning Routine: Rinse your dentures before putting them in, then brush them gently to remove any overnight buildup.

After Meals: Remove and rinse your dentures after eating to remove loose food particles.

Evening Routine: Give your dentures a thorough clean before bed, paying attention to all surfaces including the areas that sit against your gums.

Handling with Care

Dentures are more delicate than they appear. Always handle them over a soft surface or a towel to prevent damage if you drop them. When cleaning, do not bend the plastic or metal parts, and never use hot water, which can warp the material.

Overnight Storage

Most dental professionals recommend removing your dentures at night to give your gums a rest. Store them in a denture-soaking solution or plain cool water to prevent them from drying out and losing their shape. Never use hot water or bleach-based solutions.

What to Avoid

  • Abrasive cleaning materials like stiff brushes or scouring pads
  • Whitening toothpastes, which can damage the denture surface
  • Hot or boiling water, which can warp the acrylic
  • Bleach or harsh chemicals, which weaken the material and discolour the teeth

Regular Check-Ups

Even with excellent home care, your dentures need professional attention from time to time. Your gums change shape gradually, which means your dentures may become loose or uncomfortable over time. Regular check-ups allow us to assess the fit and make adjustments before problems develop.

We recommend a professional check-up at least once a year. During these visits, we can also clean your dentures professionally and check for any signs of wear or damage that may need addressing.
