Understanding Denture Relines: When and Why You Need One

If your dentures are starting to feel loose or uncomfortable, a reline might be exactly what you need. Denture relining is one of the most common and effective procedures for restoring the fit and comfort of existing dentures without the cost of replacing them entirely.

What Is a Denture Reline?

A reline involves resurfacing the inside of your denture — the part that sits against your gums — with new material. This creates a fresh, accurate impression of your current gum shape, restoring the snug fit that has been lost as your mouth has changed over time.

Why Dentures Become Loose

Your jawbone and gums are not static structures. After tooth extraction, the bone gradually reshapes and shrinks — a process called resorption. This continues slowly throughout your life, which means dentures that fit perfectly when they were made will eventually become loose.

Other factors that can affect denture fit include:

  • Weight loss or gain
  • Changes in medication
  • Ageing and natural tissue changes
  • Poor initial fit that has worsened over time

Signs You Need a Reline

Watch for these indicators that your dentures may need relining:

  1. Looseness — Your dentures shift or move when you eat or speak
  2. Increased adhesive use — You need more denture adhesive than usual
  3. Gum irritation — Sore spots, redness, or discomfort under your dentures
  4. Food trapping — Food particles getting caught between your dentures and gums
  5. Changes in bite — Your teeth do not come together the way they used to

Soft Reline vs Hard Rline

Soft Relines use a flexible, cushioning material that provides extra comfort for patients with sensitive gums, thin tissue, or bony ridges. They are often recommended for patients who have had recent extractions or who experience chronic soreness.

Hard Relines use a more rigid acrylic material similar to the original denture base. They provide a very precise, durable fit and are the standard choice for most full denture relines.

The Reline Process at Our Clinic

At Rangiora Denture Clinic, relines are completed in our on-site laboratory. The process typically involves:

  1. Taking a new impression inside your existing denture
  2. Processing the new reline material in our lab
  3. Fitting and adjusting the relined denture

Because we have our laboratory on-site, we can often complete the process faster than clinics that send work to external labs.

If your dentures are feeling less comfortable than they used to, book a free consultation to discuss whether a reline is the right solution for you.
